On April 29, 2025, the Southern District Military Court sentenced 32-year-old Yegor Semenov, a native of Melitopol, to 27 years in a special regime penal colony for attempting to mass poison cadets of the Armavir Higher Military Aviation School in Krasnodar Krai. Semenov was found guilty under the articles on high treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and an act of terrorism (Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The prosecutor's office requested a life sentence, but the court issued a less severe sentence, taking into account his admission of guilt and cooperation with the investigation.
The incident occurred in October 2023, when a huge cake filled with poison and a box of alcohol were delivered to a 20th anniversary celebration of a college graduation in Armavir. According to the Telegram channel Fighterbomber, the event organizers did not distribute the treats, as the sender remained unknown, which raised suspicions. The courier who delivered the cake quickly left the city and bought a plane ticket, which increased the wariness. Later, an examination confirmed the presence of a toxic substance in the cake, capable of causing mass poisoning.
The incident was part of a series of acts of sabotage attributed to Ukrainian special services. In 2023-2024, the FSB reported preventing dozens of terrorist attacks, including arson attacks on military registration and enlistment offices and assassination attempts on Russian officers. For South Ossetia and the Krasnodar region, where military bases are located, such threats highlight the need to strengthen counterintelligence.
