Southwest Airlines passenger killed in plane engine explosion

As a result of the fire and explosion of the engine of a passenger aircraft in the United States, one person was killed. Another seven suffered injuries of varying severity.

The victim of the accident on board was a woman who sucked into the window, broken by shrapnel exploded engine. Her injuries proved incommensurable with life, the doctors of the hospital, in which she was taken, could not save her.

It is reported that this is the first case of death of a passenger on board an American airliner, starting from 2009 year.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. From the explosion of the motor damaged windows, fuselage and wing of the aircraft, because of which the liner company "Southwest Airlines" had to go to an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

The Boeing 737-700 followed the 1380 flight from New York to Dallas. On board were 143 passengers and 5 crew members. On the record of conversations with the cockpit of the pilots made by the controllers, one can clearly hear how one of the pilots says: "We have a hole here, and somebody (into it) flew."

According to eyewitnesses, after the explosion in a broken window, one woman sucked, but the passengers were able to drag her back into the salon.

The identity of the deceased is determined. Her name is Jennifer Riordan, she served as vice president of the Wells Fargo banking company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to the American media, the deceased woman left two children.

The head of the Philadelphia fire department, Adam Tiel, said that the other seven victims had escaped with minor injuries and did not need to be hospitalized. According to him, both the crew and passengers “behaved heroically in such difficult conditions.  

Firefighters who went to the airport, found a small leakage of fuel in one of the engines and a small fire. After the aircraft landed, the fire was immediately eliminated. The incident will be investigated by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency.

The head of the NTSB, Robert Samuolt, told reporters that the ignited and exploding engine of the CFM56 type is widely used in the aviation industry.

After landing, many passengers of the 1380 flight expressed their emotions with messages in social networks. They thank fate for being alive. From their words, the picture of what happened was really terrible - everywhere in the salon was the blood, and at certain moments it seemed that the aircraft is in free fall. The professionalism of the crew made it possible to avoid a real catastrophe.
