Maintenance staff at one of Australia's largest airports, Perth Airport, were forced to carry out emergency repairs to the main runway after a Qantas plane damaged the surface during takeoff. The incident occurred with flight QF71, bound for Singapore, which took off at around 12pm on Sunday.
The footage shows pieces of the road surface being torn off and thrown into the air behind the airliner as the plane accelerated down the runway. The unusual moment was captured by photographer Mitchell, known by his stage name YPPH Plane Guy, who happened to be at the airport at the time of the incident.
Mitchell said the area appeared to be a new section of the runway that had recently been resurfaced, noting that the increased power from the plane's engines and the application of its brakes had damaged the surface.
