Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems, which Germany and Norway plan to temporarily deploy on Polish territory, will be used exclusively to protect the airspace of NATO countries. Their coverage area will not include Ukraine, the minister emphasized on air on TVN24.
"This equipment is intended to strengthen the security of NATO countries. The use of these systems to protect Ukrainian airspace is not envisaged.", - noted Kosinyak-Kamysh.
He added that the deployment of modern air defense systems is connected with the increased level of threats in the region against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the worsening situation on the eastern borders of the Alliance.
Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems will be deployed in strategically important areas of Poland. Their main task will be to protect infrastructure critical to the country's defense, as well as the airspace of the Baltic states. This decision was made as part of the coordination of NATO countries' actions aimed at strengthening the eastern flank.
