Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico wounded in assassination attempt

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded in a shooting that occurred after a cabinet meeting in the town of Gandlova. According to eyewitnesses, Fico approached local residents after a government meeting, after which several shots were heard. The Prime Minister was wounded in the chest and stomach. The police detained the suspect.

According to media reports, Fico was shot by a 71-year-old man from the city of Levice, located in western Slovakia. The motives of the shooter remain unknown. The injured prime minister was rushed by helicopter to the hospital.

A government retreat was held in Handlov, where members of the cabinet discussed the socio-economic situation in two regions of Slovakia. The incident caused widespread resonance in the country and abroad.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova condemned the assassination attempt on Robert Fico, expressing her shock and strong condemnation.

"Completely shocked by today's brutal attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, which I condemn in the strongest possible terms." she tweeted.

Politicians from neighboring countries, including Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk and President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel, expressed words of support and sympathy for Robert Fico. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the attack:

"I strongly condemn the heinous attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most valuable common good."

Robert Fico took over as Prime Minister of Slovakia in October 2023, following the victory of his party, Course Social Democracy, in parliamentary elections.
