Finnish President calls on China to 'influence Putin'

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said China could play a key role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine by influencing Russian President Vladimir Putin. He told reporters about this at a summit in Switzerland, Yle reports.

"I urge China to influence Putin to stop this war and withdraw its troops," Stubb said.

He also emphasized the importance of the role of the global South, including Africa, Asia and the Middle East, in achieving peace.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping said at a meeting with Putin in May that Beijing supports holding an international peace conference to resolve the situation in Ukraine at an appropriate time, if it is recognized by Moscow and Kyiv and subject to their equal participation. Xinhua news agency reported this.

Stubb noted that China, with its significant influence in the international arena, can help end the conflict and begin the peace process.
