Russian authorities have abandoned the idea of ​​​​expanding territorial waters in the Baltic Sea near the borders with four NATO countries - Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland. A draft government decree on revising the geographic coordinates of the state border, published on May 21, disappeared from the regulatory acts portal the next day. The official page of the website regulation.gov.ru reports that “the project has been deleted.”

The document prepared by the Russian Ministry of Defense proposed declaring part of the water area in the east of the Gulf of Finland, as well as near the cities of Baltiysk and Zelenogradsk in the Kaliningrad region, as internal sea waters. To achieve this, it was planned to change the geographic coordinates of the points that determine the position of the baselines from which the width of the territorial sea of ​​the Russian Federation is measured. The resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers on state borders in the Baltic, in force since 1985, was proposed to be partially declared invalid.
