Russia and Ukraine exchanged bodies of dead servicemen

Another exchange of bodies of the dead between Russia and Ukraine took place. The Russian side returned 757 bodies of dead servicemen to Ukraine, while Ukraine handed over 45 bodies to Russia. This was reported by the representative of the parliamentary coordination group on military operation issues, State Duma deputy Shamsail Saraliev.

The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War clarified that the returned bodies belong to servicemen who took part in battles in the Kurakhovsky, Pokrovsky, Bakhmutsky, Ugledarsky, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhya directions. The Headquarters expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for assistance in the process of returning the bodies.

The previous exchange of bodies of the dead took place on January 24, 2025. Then Russia returned 757 bodies to Ukraine, and the Ukrainian side handed over 49 bodies of dead servicemen to Russia.

The exchange of bodies is an important humanitarian aspect in the context of the ongoing conflict. It allows families to give their loved ones a dignified burial and helps maintain a minimum level of interaction between the parties.

Since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, such exchanges have been held regularly. For example, in December 2024, an exchange took place in which Russia received 42 bodies of fallen servicemen, and Ukraine received 503 bodies. In November 2024, two exchanges were held: at the beginning of the month, Ukraine received 563 bodies, and Russia received 37; at the end of November, Russia returned 502 bodies, receiving 52 in return.

The process of exchanging the bodies of the dead is carried out with the participation of forensic experts and with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This is one of the few channels of interaction between the parties in the current situation.
