Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said that the new treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is aimed at strengthening stability in Northeast Asia. He said this during talks with the head of the DPRK Defense Ministry No Gwang-chol in Pyongyang.
"It is called upon to play a stabilizing role in Northeast Asia. To make a positive contribution to maintaining the balance of power in the region. To reduce the risk of a relapse of war on the peninsula. And, of course, to lay the foundation for building a new Eurasian security system," — Belousov emphasized.
According to the minister, the basis for strengthening Russian-North Korean relations is the trusting contacts between the leaders of the two countries. The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, which took place in June in Pyongyang, demonstrated a high level of mutual trust and a desire to expand cooperation in the context of international tension.
The key result of the summit was the signing of an agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership, which Belousov called a “fundamental interstate document.”
The minister also congratulated his North Korean counterpart on his appointment as head of the military department and expressed gratitude for the invitation to visit Pyongyang.
