On September 7, 2024, an incident with the crash of a Russian drone occurred on the territory of Latvia. The drone crashed in Rezekne Municipality, as reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia. The President of the country Edgars Rinkēvičs confirmed the information, noting that the number of such incidents on the eastern flank of NATO continues to grow.
According to preliminary data, the drone flew in from the territory of Belarus, which attracted additional attention from NATO command. In connection with the incident, measures were taken to strengthen the air defense forces in the region to prevent possible further threats.
Earlier it was reported that an unknown drone had entered the airspace of Belarus from the territory of Ukraine. It was a kamikaze drone that flew to Novogrudok. It covered a distance of about 200 kilometers, after which information about its location disappeared.
"Yesterday, a Russian military drone crashed in eastern Latvia. An investigation is underway. We are in close contact with our allies. The number of such incidents on NATO's eastern flank is growing and we must resolve them together.", - said the President of Latvia.
There have been no reports of casualties or material damage at this time, but the situation is seen as a wake-up call for the entire security system of NATO's eastern flank.
