A US Coast Guard patrol vessel on routine patrol in the Aleutian Islands region of Alaska discovered a Russian warship in international waters, but within the US exclusive economic zone. This was reported by Zerohedge with reference to officials of the US armed forces.
The crew of the patrol ship Alex Haley spotted a Russian vessel about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of the Amukta Strait on Monday, according to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition, a helicopter from the Coast Guard base in Kodiak also spotted the vessel.
The Russian ship was traveling in international waters but was inside the US exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) from the US coastline, the statement said. At the same time, the crew of the American ship did not come into contact with the Russian ship, but followed it as it moved east.
“We responded with presence to ensure that there are no threats to U.S. interests in the maritime area around Alaska,” said Alex Haley Commander Stephen Baldowski.
