Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russian-American relations are at a critical point and are teetering on the brink of a complete rupture. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the diplomat's words.
“With regard to Russian-American relations, there are probably fewer expectations of changes for the better than in other areas,” — Ryabkov noted, emphasizing that the prospects for restoring dialogue between Moscow and Washington remain extremely uncertain.
According to him, the US political strategy assigns Russia the role of a "sharp adversary", which significantly complicates any attempts to normalize relations. Despite individual signals coming from the administration of President Donald Trump, the overall vector of American policy remains anti-Russian.
However, as Ryabkov reported earlier, a certain interest in resuming dialogue with Moscow can be seen in Washington. Some representatives of the American administration demonstrate a desire to discuss key issues of bilateral relations, including strategic stability, arms control and security.
At the same time, Western media outlets note that the White House's recent steps could be perceived as concessions to Russia. In particular, Newsweek reported that the Trump administration has made a number of decisions that could be considered a "gift" for President Vladimir Putin. However, what initiatives are being discussed has not yet been specified.
Relations between Russia and the United States have been going through one of their most difficult periods in recent years. Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, diplomatic contacts between the two countries have been reduced to a minimum, and sanctions pressure from Washington and its allies continues to mount. Moscow has repeatedly stated that current US policy leads to a further exacerbation of global instability.
The issue of strategic arms control remains a particularly sensitive topic. Following the US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) and the uncertainty surrounding the fate of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-III), the risks of a new round of arms race have increased significantly.
