US Navy F-18 Growler crashes off San Diego coast

On February 12, 2025, a U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler multirole electronic warfare aircraft crashed off the coast of San Diego. According to the U.S. military, the crew managed to eject and were quickly rescued by search and rescue services. The incident occurred during a training flight when the aircraft suddenly lost control and fell into the water about 20 kilometers from the shore.

The two-man crew successfully bailed out before the plane hit the water. Marine rescue services responded quickly, locating and retrieving both pilots. Their condition is assessed as satisfactory, with no serious injuries reported.

The EA-18G Growler is a specialized electronic warfare aircraft based on the F/A-18 Super Hornet. It is used to suppress enemy air defenses and provide electronic cover for other air and ground forces. The Growler plays a key role in modern operations, especially in high-tech conflicts.

The causes of the accident remain unknown at this time. US Navy officials said a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine all the circumstances of the incident. Experts are considering several possible versions, from a technical malfunction to pilot error.

In 2022, an F-35 Lightning II fighter jet also crashed near San Diego, prompting a review of a number of safety protocols and increased monitoring of aircraft technical conditions.

San Diego is a key hub for U.S. naval aviation. The region is home to several major bases, including a carrier strike group and training centers where pilots are trained and educated. Incidents involving military aircraft in the area are closely monitored by both local and federal authorities.
