Six South Korean parties initiate impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yul

Six opposition parties in the Republic of Korea have filed a motion to impeach President Yoon Seok-yul, Yonhap News Agency reports. The document, supported by 191 out of 300 deputies, will be considered at a plenary session of the National Assembly on the night of December 5. A vote on the initiative is expected on December 6 or 7.

A two-thirds majority of MPs, 200 out of 300, is needed to approve impeachment. The president's Civil Power Party, which has 108 seats, will likely not be able to block the opposition's initiative, especially given that 190 MPs, including representatives of this party, previously voted to lift the martial law imposed by Yun Seok-yeol.

If impeachment is upheld, the question of the president's removal will go to the Constitutional Court. For a final decision, six of the nine judges must find that Yun Seok-yeol's actions are illegal. During this process, the president's powers will be frozen and his duties will be transferred to the prime minister.

South Korea's political crisis has deepened after President Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law, citing threats from pro-North Korean forces. The move has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, who accuse the head of state of trying to usurp power and obstruct the legitimate work of parliament.

According to analysts, the success of the impeachment initiative depends on the consolidation of the opposition and the mood among the deputies of the "Civil Force". The decision of the Constitutional Court may also become a key factor in determining the political fate of the president.
