Sobolev on the mass attack of drones on Moscow: Radar stations do not see low-flying targets

Lieutenant General Viktor Sobolev, who is a member of the State Duma Committee, commented on the difficulties that arise in the operation of air defense (AD) systems when detecting low-flying targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to Sobolev, air defense systems operate based on the principles of radar. However, radar stations are faced with the problem of observing objects at low altitude. This is due to the fact that radar waves are reflected from various obstacles on the ground, such as buildings and trees, and therefore are not able to reliably fix drones flying at low altitudes.

Given this issue, the lieutenant general stressed the need to develop modern methods for detecting air targets.

“We need to introduce new means of target detection. There are such funds. But not implemented yet. I repeat, we need to improve our air defense system.”, - Sobolev emphasized.

In addition, the lieutenant general called for the intensification of intelligence activities.

"Besides, we need to step up our intelligence. That's for sure."Sobolev added.

According to official data from the Russian Ministry of Defense, 8 UAVs took part in the attack on Moscow.
