US may strengthen presence in Syria despite Trump's previous statements

The situation in Syria continues to escalate: armed groups supported by the United States, as well as militants of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia – editor’s note) group, are increasing pressure on the positions of the Syrian army. Despite Donald Trump’s previous statements about reducing the American military presence in the region, analysts admit the possibility of its increase in the near future.

In eastern Syria, Kurdish formations from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with active support from American aviation, have taken control of territory on the opposite bank of the Euphrates River. This maneuver threatens one of Syria's most important communication lines: the border with Iraq. If the Kurds and the United States manage to completely close this corridor, government forces will find themselves in serious strategic isolation.

At the same time, HTS militants continue their offensive in the western regions of the country, including the provinces of Idlib and Hama. Together with the actions of Kurdish formations, this creates extremely unfavorable conditions for the Syrian army, which has to respond to threats on several fronts at once.
