Starmer: Iran attack on US bases triggers NATO commitments

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said today, 22 June 2025, at 19:00 EDT, that any attack by Iran on US military bases in the region would be perceived as aggression against a NATO member, which could trigger the alliance's collective defence. Speaking at an emergency press conference in London, Starmer stressed that such actions by Tehran, especially against the backdrop of the current escalation with the United States and Israel, posed a serious threat to regional stability. His comments came after recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites including Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

The conflict escalated when the US joined Israeli operations against Iran's nuclear infrastructure on Sunday night, using precision bombs and missiles. Iran responded with missile attacks on Israeli cities and increased activity by its allies, including the Houthis in Yemen, who have threatened US ships in the Red Sea. According to Reuters, Tehran is considering strikes against US bases in Iraq, Qatar and Bahrain, making Starmer's statement particularly relevant. The British prime minister noted that NATO has a duty to defend its members, including the US, in the event of direct aggression, which could lead to a wider conflict.

Starmer also stressed the importance of a diplomatic solution, calling on Iran to refrain from escalation. However, analysts believe that his words could signal London’s readiness to support the alliance’s military actions. According to the BBC, the UK has already sent the frigate HMS Lancaster to the Persian Gulf to strengthen NATO’s presence, which confirms the intention to ensure the safety of shipping. At the same time, NATO has not yet held official consultations on this issue.

Iran is ramping up preparations for possible retaliatory action. According to Iran’s Mehr news agency, the IRGC is strengthening its positions in Khuzestan province, deploying mobile Fateh-110 missile systems to strike regional targets. In response, the US has redeployed additional forces to Qatar, including Patriot batteries, to protect the Al Udeid air base.
