US President Donald Trump made a resonant statement, announcing the end of the BRICS association. According to him, the organization “died” after threatening to introduce 100 percent duties on products from member countries.

The introduction of high tariffs will be a response to the attempts of the BRICS countries to create an alternative to the dollar in international trade. Earlier, the countries of the association, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, etc., discussed possible mechanisms to reduce dependence on the American currency. Among them are the use of national currencies in mutual settlements and the creation of their own settlement system.

Trump's statement was a response to ongoing discussions within BRICS about de-dollarization of international transactions. The US President perceived these initiatives as a potential threat to the American economy and the global influence of the dollar. He warned that any attempts to counteract the dollar would be harshly suppressed by economic measures.

At the same time, Moscow and Beijing have not yet confirmed plans to create a common BRICS currency. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that such projects are under discussion, but are not yet a priority. According to him, the countries are focused on developing mechanisms for settlements in national currencies and creating new financial institutions to support trade and investment.

Economists see Trump's statement as a signal of a possible escalation of the trade war with key US partners. Raising tariffs could lead to retaliatory measures from BRICS and further aggravate the international economic situation. This is especially true for the export of industrial products and raw materials, a significant share of which comes to the US from BRICS countries.

The White House is currently preparing documents to establish new tariffs. The exact timing of the introduction of 100% duties has not yet been announced, but, according to sources in the Trump administration, it could happen in the coming months if the parties do not reach a compromise.
