Türkiye Gains Influence in Syria: Ankara Resumes Diplomatic Relations with Damascus After Ten-Year Break

Turkey is taking active steps to restore diplomatic relations with Syria, which were cut off more than a decade ago amid the civil war. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier reiterated his readiness for dialogue with Damascus, saying: “We are open to initiatives for normalization with Syria. There is no reason not to establish diplomatic relations.”

In June 2024, Erdogan noted that Turkey has no intention of interfering in Syria's internal affairs and is ready to act together, as it did in the past. These statements followed a meeting between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Russian President's Special Representative for the Syrian Settlement, Alexander Lavrentyev, where Assad confirmed Syria's openness to initiatives aimed at improving relations with Turkey, provided that the country's sovereignty is respected.

The US, in turn, is seeking to strengthen its influence in the region before Donald Trump’s possible return to power. The Biden administration is taking steps to strengthen its position in Syria, given Trump’s previous statements about its reluctance to intervene in the Syrian conflict.

Experts note that Trump's return to the presidency could lead to a change in US foreign policy in the Middle East, including Syria. Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov believes that Trump's rise to power could be a "geopolitical pause" for the US, as Washington realizes that military methods have not brought success in Syria or other regions.
