Ukraine intends to regain control over Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Ukraine intends to regain control of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest in Europe, which has been under the control of Russian forces since March 2022. This was announced by Viktoria Hryb, the chair of the Verkhovna Rada subcommittee on energy security, in an interview with The New York Times. According to her, Kyiv is actively working on this issue, although the specific conditions under which Russia could agree to hand over the plant remain unclear.

"We want her back," — Grib emphasized, noting the strategic importance of the facility for the country’s national security and energy sector.

Zaporizhzhya NPP, located in Energodar on the shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir, provided about 20% of Ukraine's electricity before the conflict. After it was occupied by Russian troops, the station was disconnected from the Ukrainian energy system, and its management was transferred to Rosatom structures.

Grib's statement came amid preparations for talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin scheduled for March 18, 2025. According to the NYT, Washington admits that Russia will retain control over Crimea and some of the new territories, but the fate of the Zaporizhzhya NPP could be a subject of bargaining. White House sources indicate that Trump is considering options for resolving the conflict, including territorial concessions, although the US position on specific assets, such as the station, has not yet been announced. Kyiv fears that the US administration may compromise without taking into account Ukraine's interests.
