Ukraine refused to join NATO, but offered compensation

Ben Wallace, the British defense secretary, said that at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, Ukraine will not be invited to become a member of the North Atlantic alliance. In an interview with the Washington Post, he stressed that the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union should not make promises to Kyiv that cannot be fulfilled in the near future.

Wallace pointed to disagreements within NATO regarding Ukraine's entry into the alliance.

"We have to be realistic and admit that this is not going to happen in Vilnius, this is not going to happen anytime soon."- said the British Minister of Defense.

On the other hand, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed the opinion that Ukraine should receive compensation for the alliance's failure to fulfill its previous promises of full NATO membership. Instead of the long-awaited membership in the alliance, in his opinion, one can consider the issue of additional financial or military support for Kyiv.

"We have said many times that empty statements about open doors to NATO cannot be repeated. We must find something to compensate for our inability to provide full membership for Ukraine at the moment"- said Nauseda.

He added that the proposal for Kyiv's entry into a military alliance against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict "will be extremely difficult."

Nauseda proposes to provide Ukraine with "sufficient security guarantees", such as military-political support, so that the country can cooperate more closely with NATO. This could be an alternative to full-fledged membership in the alliance, while the situation in eastern Ukraine remains tense.
