Ukrainian women join "Ukrainian Legion" in Poland

In Poland, the formation of the "Ukrainian Legion" continues, with women volunteers joining for the first time. On January 10, 2025, the second group of Ukrainian citizens living abroad signed contracts at the Consulate General of Ukraine in Lublin. Among the new recruits were women who chose specialties related to medicine and communications.

Most of the new volunteers live in Poland, but the group also includes Ukrainian citizens from Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania and other European countries. After signing contracts, the recruits went to one of the training centers of the Polish Armed Forces to undergo basic military training under the guidance of Polish instructors using modern weapons from NATO countries.

The representative of the unit's command, Lieutenant Colonel Petro Gorkusha, noted that the number of applications for service in the "Ukrainian Legion" continues to grow, indicating a high level of citizens' trust in this initiative. According to him, the recruitment center has already received about 1300 applications from Ukrainian citizens living abroad.

At the same time, the issue of women's mobilization continues to be discussed in Ukraine. The Verkhovna Rada adopted in the first reading bill No. 12076, which expands opportunities for women to serve in the army. Now women who meet health and age requirements will be able to voluntarily undergo basic military training and enlist in the military.

Former British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should allow younger men and women to be mobilised. He said they could be trained abroad, return to work and be mobilised if needed.
