On May 16, 2025, Acting Governor of Kursk Oblast Alexander Khinshtein reported a new attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the region's civilian infrastructure. An enemy FPV drone struck an electrical substation in the city of Rylsk, causing minor damage to the transformer. As a result of the accident, the power supply to Rylsk, several village councils, as well as the villages of Korenevo and Glushkovo, powered by the Rylsk substation, was disrupted. Khinshtein wrote about this on his Telegram channel, emphasizing that emergency teams have already been sent to the scene to eliminate the consequences.
This is not the first attack on the Rylsk substation. As reported by EADaily, on February 3, 2025, a Ukrainian drone damaged a power cable at the same facility, temporarily cutting off power to Rylsk and the surrounding area.
Rylsk, located in the border zone of the Kursk region, is regularly attacked. On May 11, according to TASS, the Ukrainian Armed Forces fired missiles from the HIMARS MLRS at the city, damaging a hotel and a car wash and wounding three people. Russian troops later destroyed the installation used for the shelling.
Kursk region remains one of the most affected by the attacks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Khinshtein previously reported that since the beginning of the conflict in the region more than 200 civilians have died, and the number of wounded has exceeded 1000.
