A batch of Su-35 fighters has likely been delivered to Iran

On January 27, 2025, Deputy Chief of the Central Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces "Khatam al-Anbiya", General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ali Shadmani officially confirmed the purchase of a batch of Russian Su-35 fighters by Tehran. He noted that Iran makes military purchases as needed to strengthen its air, land and sea forces. However, the exact number of aircraft purchased and the amount of the deal were not disclosed.

According to reports from the specialized German publication Flug Revue, Moscow and Tehran initially agreed on the delivery of 25 fighters, but the number of ordered aircraft was subsequently increased to 50 units. According to Iranian sources, the first two fighters were handed over to the Iranian Air Force during a closed ceremony at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant on November 18, 2024, after which they were delivered disassembled to Mehrabad Airport in Tehran.

The Su-35 is a multirole super-maneuverable fighter of the 4++ generation, designed to destroy air, ground and surface targets, as well as infrastructure facilities covered by air defense systems and located at a significant distance from the base airfield. The developer of the Su-35 is the Sukhoi Experimental Design Bureau, which is part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), which, in turn, is part of the Rostec state corporation. The aircraft are manufactured at the Gagarin Aviation Plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
