The Pentagon denies the link between the arms race and the new missile defense strategy.

John Ruud, deputy head of the Pentagon for political issues, announces a new development strategy for the US missile defense system, as being of an exclusively defensive nature. According to him, its adoption does not mean that the United States enters into an arms race. The representative of the US military department recalls that already in the very name of "defense" there is the content of the new strategy. Evaluating the new US missile defense strategy, experts from the American Association for Arms Control call it overly costly. According to their estimates, it is capable of undermining the strategic stability that exists in the world. This could aggravate US relations with Russia and China.

A new US missile defense development strategy was introduced on January 17 by President Donald Trump. At the same time, he noted that the system should intercept any missile fired in the country. As for the Pentagon, they circulated a document stating that Washington is not going to recognize as a strict requirement any restrictions on the development of missile defense systems and their deployment.

Earlier it was reported that America is going to add to the missile defense system already deployed in the state of Alaska twenty missile interceptors. It is emphasized that the US leadership is paying the most attention to nuclear deterrence of the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China, but to a greater degree the American missile defense system is designed to intercept what rogue states can threaten.
