Not everyone in the industry is ready to accept the choice: one unnamed defense industry source commented sharply on the situation, expressing surprise at Hegseth's candidacy and noting that the Defense Department had hoped for someone with "extensive experience" in national security and military strategy.

Democratic Congressman Adam Smith also expressed his bewilderment, saying that "I didn't know who he was until recently."
