A Chinese nuclear submarine suddenly surfaced in the Taiwan Strait

A Chinese nuclear-powered submarine (SSBN) surfaced in the Taiwan Strait today, prompting concern and comments from Taiwan's Ministry of Defense. According to representatives of the department, they are in full control of the situation. The submarine's appearance comes amid recent activity by Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) air and naval forces around Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province and is seeking to regain control.

Taiwanese media published photographs of the submarine taken at dawn Tuesday by a fishing boat that was about 125 miles off Taiwan's west coast. The submarine is believed to be a Type 094 SSBN, also known as the Jin class. The boat, one of six in service with the PLA Navy, displaces about 11 tons and can carry up to 000 JL-12 ballistic missiles, making it an important part of China's nuclear force, providing a strategic second-strike capability.

Taiwanese fishermen were surprised when the submarine suddenly surfaced, followed by an unidentified warship escorting it on its way to the Chinese mainland. Despite the activity of patrol aircraft in the area, it was not possible to detect the Chinese submarine in a timely manner.
