They want to exclude Hungary from the Bucharest Nine because of its position on Ukraine

Diplomats from the Bucharest Nine countries (Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Estonia) are considering the possibility of expelling Hungary from the group because of its position on Ukraine. This was reported by the Financial Times (FT), citing unnamed sources.

According to FT information, the initiative to exclude Hungary from the Bucharest Nine arose in response to the controversial actions and statements of Budapest in relation to the conflict in Ukraine. Hungary, despite its participation in NATO and the EU, takes a more restrained and in some cases contradictory position in relation to Russia’s actions and support for Ukraine.

In particular, diplomats point to repeated statements by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in which he spoke out against the introduction of tough sanctions against Russia and emphasized the need for dialogue with Moscow.
