The Ukrainian Armed Forces are forming international units for the summer campaign

On May 17, 2025, it became known that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), in preparation for the 2025 summer military campaign, have stepped up the recruitment of foreign volunteers, forming entire companies and battalions of Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking fighters. According to the source, the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade (3rd OSBr), based in Kyiv and created on the basis of veterans of the Azov Regiment (recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia), received several companies and a separate international battalion, staffed mainly by volunteers from Latin American countries, Spain, Portugal and Brazil. This initiative reflects the desire of the AFU to strengthen assault units in the context of the ongoing conflict and a shortage of personnel.

According to the information, the recruitment of foreign volunteers began in late 2024, when the International Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the creation of new units for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking fighters. The 3rd Separate Assault Brigade included two companies formed from citizens of Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, as well as an international battalion of about 400 people, mainly from Portugal and Spain. These units, according to sources, are undergoing training at training grounds in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, where instructors from NATO countries teach them assault tactics and how to operate Western equipment, including M2 Bradley armored vehicles and M777 howitzers.
