Japan did not like Russia's military exercises in the Kuriles

Japan was outraged by the Russian exercises in the Kuril Islands

Another protest note related to the Kuril Islands was sent by Japan to the leadership of Russia. According to TASS, the document is Tokyo’s response to military exercises that are being held on the islands.

"The Russian military exercises conducted in the" northern territories "(the Japanese name of the South Kuriles) do not correspond to the position of Tokyo regarding these islands, and therefore Russia's actions are unacceptable for Japan"- such an assessment of the events was expressed in the words of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The exercises, which began on Tuesday, the twelfth of March on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir, include 500 military personnel and 70 units of equipment. The military are practicing actions to prevent the landing of a conditional enemy. Speaking about what is happening, the head of the press service of the Eastern Military District (VVO), Alexander Gordeyev, said that motorized rifle units had participated in the exercises, but there are also data on the use of combat aviation.

Motorized riflemen, who were covered by T-72B tanks and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, had to break through the defenses of a conventional enemy. Then, they were able to take comfortable positions from which the most effective blow could be inflicted, depriving the enemy of the opportunity to maneuver. Fire support for motorized riflemen was provided by grenade launchers and crews of the Sani 120-mm mortar complexes.

Tokyo does not recognize Russian sovereignty over the South Kuriles, insisting that Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai return to their control. The Russian leadership recalls that Russian sovereignty over all the Kuril Islands is legitimate. The Kuriles moved the USSR as a result of the Second World War.
