On April 30, 2025, the Vladimir Region Government announced a ban on people and vehicles entering forests within a 10 km radius around a military unit in the Kirzhach District. The decision was made in connection with the emergency situation (ES) caused by a fire and subsequent detonation of ammunition at a military warehouse on April 22. The restrictions are aimed at ensuring public safety and minimizing risks associated with possible unexploded ordnance and ongoing cleanup efforts.
The incident at the arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) of the Russian Defense Ministry in the Kirzhachsky District occurred on April 22. As reported by the Defense Ministry, the fire started due to a violation of safety requirements when working with explosive materials, which led to the detonation of ammunition in the warehouse. According to Newsweek, the explosions continued for several hours, accompanied by secondary detonations.
The scale of the emergency was significant. Explosions damaged several residential buildings in nearby settlements, including the village of Barsovo, where residents observed thick smoke. According to the BBC, the warehouse contained about 105 thousand tons of ammunition, including Iskander, Tochka-U, Kinzhal missiles, as well as shells for the Pantsir-S1, S-300, S-400 air defense systems and the Grad, Smerch, and Uragan MLRS. However, there was no confirmation of this from the Russian Defense Ministry.
