The leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation faction Gennady Zyuganov expressed skepticism about Donald Trump's return to the US presidency, saying that one should not expect changes in American policy aimed at improving relations with Russia. In his commentary, Zyuganov recalled Trump's actions during his first presidential term, which included strikes on Syria, support for nationalists in Ukraine and the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions.
"Only naive people can hope that he will pursue a policy in our favor. But I think she will be less aggressive at the initial stage," — Zyuganov noted, adding that the United States, regardless of who holds the presidential post, remains a country that adheres to a strategy of global dominance.
According to the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Russia should not count on Trump softening his approach, despite his loud statements about his readiness for dialogue. Zyuganov emphasized that historically, Washington's policy towards Moscow is based on containment and sanctions pressure, and such approaches will continue under any administration.
Trump's first term, according to Zyuganov, showed that his rhetoric about wanting to improve relations with Russia did not correspond to real actions. In 2017, the United States launched strikes on Syria, where Russian troops are present, and also increased support for Ukrainian nationalists. At the same time, during his presidency, new sanctions were introduced against Russia, which affected both the economy and individual politicians and entrepreneurs.
