Alicante International Airport (Alicante-Elche Airport), is one of the largest air havens in Spain. Thanks to a well-developed tourism industry, this airport increases its basic performance indicators year after year, in particular, in 2016 year, the air harbor served more than 12,3 million passengers.

History of Alicante International Airport

Construction of Alicante airport began at the beginning of 50-ies of the last century, and. the basis was the military base of Rabas, which allowed the fastest possible acceleration of the completion of work, in connection with which, already in 1951, the air harbor began to take its first flights.

Initially, the activities of the airport of Alicante were very limited, since the airport served only domestic flights, however, if in 1951 the volume of passengers served was 3171 people, then by 1958, this figure grew by 2,5 times, reaching the figure of 8552 person.

In 1967, Alicante airport has undergone a number of changes, in particular, its infrastructure has developed infrastructure, the runway has been improved in order to provide the opportunity to receive large aircraft, and the airport itself was designed to receive 1 million passengers per year.

For a relatively short period, the volume of serviced passengers of Alicante airport was increased to 1 million 250 thousand passengers per year, in connection with which, in 1972 the construction of a new terminal began, and the length of the runway was increased to 3 thousand meters.

In 1988, Alicante airport set a new record for the number of passengers serviced, reaching an indicator of 3 million people, with national carriers and foreign airlines actively performing their flights here.

In connection with the growing interest among tourists, already in 1996 year, the volume of passenger traffic of the International Airport of Alicante reached an indicator of 9 million people, so the air harbor once again needed improvement, and after a while, the airport already had 5 telescopic ladders, an office building was built for the representative offices of airlines.

At the beginning of the 2000-ies, the volume of passengers served began to fall, which was due to a number of financial problems for airlines, however, after optimizing the airport's activities, the air harbor managed to achieve an increase in the number of passengers serviced to 12,3 million.
