History of the International Airport of Bordeaux Mérignac

In 1910, on the territory of the modern International Airport of Bordeaux Mérignac, there was a swampy area, which was acquired for the construction of a small airfield here. Considering the fact that aviation in this period was just beginning to develop, the project did not receive any scale.

With the onset of the First World War, the built airfield was actively used by military aircraft to service aircraft, and it turned out to be so promising that the military used this aerodrome for many decades.

In 1920, the runway of the airfield was only 400 meters, but subsequently, in order to increase the efficiency of the air harbor, it was decided to build another runway, which allowed the simultaneous reception and dispatch of aircraft.

In the first half of the 20-ies of the last century, the first regular flights started from Bordeaux airport, in particular, the air harbor served such itineraries as Bordeaux-Toulouse-Montpellier, as well as Paris-Bordeaux-Biarritz. Originally the airport was used exclusively for transportation of cargoes and postal items, however, later, the air harbor began to carry out and transportation of passengers.

At the end of the 20-x beginning of the 30-ies of the last century, the French Air Force began to be based on the territory of the airport, and the number of aircraft used here was very large.

In 1939, the runway of the airfield was increased to an extent of 1300 meters, however, with the onset of World War II, the airfield was captured by German forces, which not only increased the runway length, but also provided an opportunity for receiving heavy aircraft.

In 1944, the military airfield was almost completely destroyed by a massive bombardment by the Allies, and therefore, after the end of hostilities, the air harbor had to be rebuilt.

In the period from 50 to 80 in the last century, the Bordeaux Mérignac Airport did not have a large pace of development, however, with the onset of 90, this air harbor began to attract a lot of attention, and therefore the volume of passenger traffic began to grow rapidly.

In 2005, the volume of passengers served was more than 3 million people, in 2012, this figure increased to 4,38 million people, and by the end of 2017 year, the air harbor served more than 6,2 million passengers.
