History of Brussels International Airport

In 1940, when German invasion of Belgium began, German forces began building an airfield capable of receiving and servicing warplanes used to attack European cities and countries. The original project envisaged the creation of three runways, which allowed receiving and sending military aircraft without interruption, and also regardless of the current meteorological conditions.

After the end of the Second World War, it was decided to create a civil air harbor at the existing airfield. In connection with this, in 1948 a new terminal building was built, the runways were enlarged in length, and the first civilian flights began to be made, and the airport was actively used not only for transportation of goods and postal items, but also for passenger transportation .

In 1956, the Belgian authorities decided to build a new runway on the territory of the Brussels International Airport, which ensured the maximum efficiency of the operation of the air harbor.

Between 60 and 90, the International Airport Brussels was actively developing, in particular, the route network of the air harbor was significantly increased, the volume of served passengers exceeded the mark of 1 million people.

In 2005, Brussels International Airport was recognized as the best air haven in Europe, while the volume of passengers served has already exceeded the mark of 16,1 million people.

In 2017, the airport served 24,7 million passengers, and by 2020 this figure is expected to increase to 30 million.
