Antonov An-4


An apparatus Air-4 is a seaplane with the presence of the floating chassis. It was constructed in the Antonov Design Bureau based biplane AN-2.

Between 1950 1951 year by the Design Bureau №153 designed and built An-2V float on the chassis. The first flight of an airplane made a test pilot V. Didenko July 31 51 years. In August of the same year we conducted production tests, which ended successfully, and in the period from October to November to fruition state tests. After them, by order of the plane recommended for serial production. He also received a new designation - the AN-4. The construction was carried out in the territory of the USSR and Poland.


Experienced operation of the float An-2V "Water" began in the period from 1954 to 1955 year. Tentatively it was decided to conduct tests in the lake-river areas, in particular in Karelia, in the estuaries of the rivers Pechora and Irtysh. Tests were also carried out in other territories with a large river and lake network without landing sites. An-4 possessed high maneuverability in the water areas, regardless of the condition of the water surface. This opportunity has appeared due to the installation of a reverse propeller and water rudders. The operation of the aircraft was possible in coastal areas of rivers and lakes with a depth of 0,8 m to 1,2 m due to low draft, thereby simplifying mooring.

The first production car with number 15947307 came to Karelia in 1956 year. After some time about a hundred copies of actively exploited in Naryan-Mar, Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk, Surgut, Salekhard, Irkutsk, Igarka, Khatanga, Dudinka, Turukhansk and Tobolsk.


These seaplanes were widely used by fisheries, as passenger, in the conditions of carrying out expeditions, for transportation of products, mail and other types of cargo, delivered to remote and hard-to-reach places. But there was a minus. In the traditions of the Slavic people there is a pernicious habit of drinking! Not having proper medical and administrative control, often during the flight the crew simply drank in the workplace, resulting in emergency and traumatic situations. As a result, in order to cope with this, in the 1983 year decided to stop using and repairing An-4.

But the story is not over the aircraft. According to the Air Transport Department of the Russian Federation 1994, the presence of this aircraft in the northern parts of the country amounted to more than 300 units. Many residents (herders, hunters, fishermen) there the remote areas repeatedly requested to return to the use of AN-2V to increase the effectiveness of life in the absence of normal communication, trade, and cultural and community service. This issue did not find a logical solution.
