Bill Gates Reveals The Next Big Thing In Tech And It's Not The Metaverse

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is the next big technological shift that users can look forward to in the coming years, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently said while chatting with a Reddit user last week. Gates believes that the metaverse and Web3 are revolutionary, but not as revolutionary as AI.

Gates' comments come at a time when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg appears to have squandered his wealth chasing a pipe dream with the concept of a digital universe where everyone logs in to communicate, work and play no longer gaining momentum.

On the other hand, ChatGPT, a chatbot from OpenAI, has caught everyone's attention. Many believe it has the potential to even challenge the business model of Google, the world-famous place to ask questions.

Rise of AI

However, AI has gone far beyond solving search queries. Recently " Interesting engineering" announced that the artificial intelligence system developed by a startup must defend its first case in a US court. In addition to examining the archaic data needed to prepare the defense, the AI is also expected to work in real time and provide the defendant with appropriate responses via earpiece.

The People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) has come to believe in this technology and is using AI to simulate war games for invasion operations in Taiwan, where US naval vessels are being tracked and electronic countermeasures deployed. While the use of AI in warfare is a hot topic of debate, experts in China believe the technology could be used to deter the US from doing anything in the Taiwan region.

Thankfully, Gates isn't referring to such applications when he talks about AI. Instead, he said he was impressed with the generative AI that creates new content and wants to use AI to run his Foundation.

How AI can help

Gates is confident that AI can have a significant impact on education and healthcare. For example, it can be used to teach kids math and make it interesting. In medicine, AI can help people get medical advice in regions where doctors are not available.

When a user pointed out that the introduction of AI would lead to job losses for teachers and doctors, Gates disagreed, stating that the world needs more of them, not less.

Gates' outlook may also have been influenced by the work he continues to do with Microsoft, which is reportedly looking to invest another $10 billion in OpenAI. However, he is not the only one talking about AI. The recently concluded CES 2023 showcased a host of new AI-powered apps, from pet health monitoring services to ones that can track people on the road as you drive.
