The official development of the Boeing 737-500 aircraft began in May 1987, when it became clear that the Boeing 737-200 aircraft did not meet the new requirements for noise level and fuel consumption.

The new aircraft was equipped with economical turbofan engines CFM International CFM56-3B1 with 82.3 kN thrust. Subsequently, some models of the 737-500 airliner, were equipped with engines CFM56-3C-1с with thrust 89.0 kN. Due to their design, these engines had a much lower noise level than required by ICAO standards. This allowed to increase the comfort in the aircraft, as well as reduce the harmful impact on the external environment.

The cockpit is unified with all «737 Classic» series aircraft, allowing airlines to save costs on retraining pilots. Aircraft Avionics complex consists of a digital EFIS company «Honeywell». Data on the state of the flight are displayed on four LCD display, and duplicated electromechanical devices. The aircraft is also the setting of the GPS satellite navigation system.

The first flight of Boeing 737-500 30 held June 1989 years. American FFA certificate of readiness for flight, was received in February 12 1990 years. The first delivery of production aircraft took place already 28 February this year in the US low cost airline "Southwest Airlines».
