When built Boeing 737-900, the fuselage of the new aircraft was extended into two sections. The first section size 1,57 meter was placed in front of the carrier wing, and the second section, the size of 1,07 meters, was located behind the wing.

On Boeing 737-900 installed turbovintelyatornye, Turbofan Engine SFM International CFM56-7B26s. Each of the installed engine has a thrust 117 kN. In the future, to increase the duty on some versions have been installed engines CFM International CFM56-7B27s with traction 121.4 kN.

The cockpit is unified with the rest of the Next Generation aircraft. Also, most of the equipment is similar to the aircraft of the Boeing 777 family. In particular, the NG series aircraft, including the Boeing 737-900, are equipped with a digital avionics complex EFIS, manufactured by the American company Honeywell, with a Common Display System, consisting of six TFTs screens that display all the necessary information about the flight. By increasing the length of the fuselage as compared to 737-800, it was increased in two-class passenger cabin configurations. Now she was 177 seats. The maximum number of seats, at an economical cabin configuration remained at 189 passenger seats, as well as on 737-800. This was due to the fact that the design of Boeing 737-900, number of doors, as required by flight rules US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not been increased. For this reason, the maximum number of seats remains the same.

Later, in July 2005, it was announced that it was working on a modification of the Boeing 737-900ER, originally called the Boeing 737-900X. This version is equipped with additional doors, which made it possible to increase the maximum passenger capacity according to FFA standards. The number of passenger seats with an economical cabin layout on the Boeing 737-900ER is 215 seats. On this version, additional fuel tanks were also installed and wing winglets were modified, this increased the flight range to 5920 kilometers.

Based on Boeing 737-900ER, the aircraft was designed for corporate and business aviation - Boeing Business Jet 3 (BBJ3), equipped with a comfortable interior. Range BBJ3 flight is 8750 kilometers.

To date, the production of Boeing 737-900 was discontinued in favor of the release of a higher priority and more popular machines - Boeing 737-900ER.
