USA

A type: Twin-engine transport aircraft

Capacity: A crew of two and up to 61 fully equipped soldiers

The rugged aircraft Provider can trace its pedigree from the XG-20 all-metal airframe for the company Chase Aircraft, built in 1949. The US Air Force showed interest in its variant with engines, so the company equipped the second prototype of the glider with two Double Wasp engines and assigned it the designation XS-123 "Avitruc" (air truck). In 1953, a contract for 300 copies of the C-123B aircraft was issued to the company Kaizer-Frazer, and since the latter soon ran into production difficulties, Fairchild fulfilled the order. The first serial aircraft began to flow into the US Air Force at the end of 1954. Strong construction and excellent flight characteristics made it popular with the crews of tactical transport aviation.

The Airline Provider also became the first US Air Force transport aircraft to enter the fighting in the Vietnam War. In addition to the transportation of cargo and troops, the UC-123B was used to spray pesticides ("Agent Orange") as part of the "Ranch Hand" plan, and two C-123B aircraft were converted to the standard "AU" and were used at night against the road freight columns of Communists with the use of sensors, light missiles and cluster bombs. Flight characteristics of the S-123 aircraft were significantly improved by installing in separate nacelles two additional turbojet engines 385 during the modification of the X version at the beginning of the 1960 aircraft of modification B to modification K.

At the same time, special modifications N / 3 (ten converted aircraft) got a similar boost power, but with the help of jet engines 044 of The Fairchild, installed in nacelles at the wing tips, - the last aircraft with wheel-ski landing gear used Air National Guard (ANG) Alaska. Aircraft C-123 were finally taken out of the military operation in the United States in the year 1979.
