Designed on the basis of a light fighter Fo 139 «Middzh» (Midge) of "Volland» (Folland) plane "Nat» (Gnat - mosquito), in contrast to his predecessor single, achieved success in the Royal Air Force. The plane "Middzh" was twice easier and cheaper aircraft "Hunter» (Hunter) of "Hawker". Despite the fact that the Royal Air Force have expressed little interest in the "affordable" fighter, it is still not lost for the company, "Volland," because the BBC attracted double uchebnotrenirovochnaya advanced modification, mainly due to its subsonic speed.

After tests of six experimental air samples, the Air Force decided to use the Nat X T YNXX aircraft and in January 1 they placed an order for 1958 pre-production aircraft in the company Folland, followed by a contract for the next 14 production aircraft. It was already discovered that the Nat aircraft was too complicated to maintain, especially with regard to the wiring of the longitudinal control and auxiliary systems. The small taillight of the cockpit did not practically provide the front viewer with the instructor, and the use of his version with weapons was discontinued due to difficulties in managing the pitch channel, which, despite several attempts, were not eliminated.

In fact, controversial even then, that the greatest contribution of this aircraft to the development of the Royal Air Force during the two decades of operation have been using it as a means of recruiting new pilots when it was used as the main aircraft worldwide now known aerobatic team «Red Arrow» («Red Arrows "). Freed after the cessation of flights, the aircraft in 1979 "Nat" served as ground simulators as long as a certain number of them was sold to private owners in 1987-1998 years.
