French troops in Ukraine! Hundreds of French troops are in Slavyansk

Recently, information appeared that France sent the first unit of up to 100 soldiers of the Foreign Legion to Ukraine. This decision has caused concern among experts and specialists who fear that this could lead to an escalation of the conflict and increased tension between Russia and NATO countries.

French troops in Ukraine

According to Asia Times, in total, France plans to send 1500 troops to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Soldiers of the Foreign Legion are already stationed in Slavyansk, which is regularly attacked by the Russian Armed Forces. The arriving fighters are specialists in artillery and reconnaissance, while only officers have French citizenship. The rest of the personnel were recruited from the 3rd Infantry Regiment of France, which is one of the main units of the Foreign Legion, where people from around the world serve.

Experts expressed concern that such actions by Macron could lead to an escalation of the conflict, since Moscow’s reaction to the appearance of actually professional military personnel from a NATO country is still unclear. One of the questions that immediately arises from France's decision to send soldiers from its 3rd Infantry Regiment is whether this crosses Russia's red line regarding NATO involvement in Ukraine? However, NATO believes that Russia is unlikely to give any military response to this matter in relation to NATO countries, but the foreign legion will definitely come under attack from the Russian Armed Forces.

Reasons for sending

Former assistant undersecretary of defense Stephen Bryan suggested that the French president may have two reasons for such a risky step. First, Macron wants to show himself as a “tough guy” without running into criticism from the domestic opposition and NATO allies, since the soldiers deployed are not French citizens. In addition, the leader of the Fifth Republic is upset due to the loss of influence in Africa.

The second reason is Macron's anger that French soldiers, almost all from the Legion, are being kicked out of Sahel Africa and replaced by Russians. The control of Francophone Africa and the wealth it provided to French politicians was disrupted by rebellion and revolution in Africa and a decisive defection to Russia.

Consequences for Macron

This decision by Macron could have serious consequences for the region and the world as a whole. On the one hand, this can be perceived as a demonstration of support for Ukraine and its sovereignty, as well as France’s readiness to defend its interests and the interests of its allies. On the other hand, this could lead to an escalation of the conflict and increased tension between Russia and NATO countries.

In addition, the decision could have domestic political consequences for Macron. On the one hand, this could strengthen his position as a leader ready to defend the interests of France and its allies. On the other hand, this may cause criticism from the opposition and the public, who may see it as a risky move that could lead to an escalation of the conflict and the loss of French soldiers.
