Grumman S-2 Tracker / C-1 Trader. A photo. Characteristics.

USA

A type: Twin-engine piston aircraft and anti-aircraft cargo delivery to the deck of aircraft carriers

Capacity: A crew of four (on a modification of S-2) and a crew of two and up to nine passengers (on a modification of C-1)

Constructed as a replacement for a single aircraft by a bunch of "hunter / assassin" from two Guardian aircraft, the Tracker aircraft lived a long life in combat operation, which lasts almost four decades. The aircraft was designed in an incredibly short time. The small size of the S-2, however, was able to accommodate everything needed to detect and destroy enemy submarines: anti-submarine radar equipment, sensors and weapons. The combination of economical star-shaped Cyclon engines by the company Wright and the wing of a large scale gave the aircraft excellent opportunities for barrage and good flight characteristics when maneuvering in the region of the aircraft carrier. Due to the high demand for space on board the ship, all the functional equipment of the S-2 was installed in such a way that it was possible to perform its cleaning in the fuselage when it was not used: APS-38 radar was placed in the under-body fairing-basket, an aeromagnetic detector Pulled into the tail, and eight sonar buoys were stored in the back of the nacelle engines.

The first aircraft S-2F-1 (received designation S- 2A in 1962 year) entered the Navy in February 1954 years 1968 and when production ended the year on a modified S-2E, the company "Grumman" 1181 built aircraft "Tracker / Trader" . Gradually, modernized and developed in the anti-aircraft role Tracker also became the basis for the special electronic countermeasures aircraft E-1V "Tracer» (Tracer) and transport aircraft C-1A "Trader» (Trader - trading) for the delivery of goods on board aircraft carriers.

Although in the middle of 1970-ies of the plane was taken out of service in the US Navy, at least eight of the twelve countries that have purchased anti-aircraft modifications, continue their daily operation; at the same time with 1970-ies in North America and in France, as the piston S-2, and airplanes, converted by turboprop engines used as aircraft fire.
