Design work on the creation of a multi-purpose aircraft Harbin Y-12 began in connection with the need to ensure the domestic market of China with modern and affordable multi-purpose aircraft that can be used both in civil and military aviation.

The first flight of Harbin Y-12 made in 1982 year, however, due to some technical problems, aviation engineers from Harbin Aircraft Industry Group decided to thoroughly refine the design of this multipurpose aircraft, which led to only some delays with the Launch into production, but did not have an actual effect on the cost of the aircraft. In the same production Harbin Y-12 aircraft entered the 1985 year, and almost immediately won the domestic market of China, and then went on export to other countries, and the high proportion of the popularity of this aircraft speaks for the fact that the release of the Harbin model Y-12 continues to this day.

The Harbin Y-12 aircraft is designed to carry 17 passengers, or to transport cargo with a total weight of up to 2460 kilograms, and, if necessary, the turboprop aircraft can be equipped in such a way that it becomes suitable for the carriage of both passengers and cargo. The maximum flight range of the Harbin Y-12 is 1340 kilometers, which makes the aircraft suitable for operation on both local and interregional airlines.

The aircraft is powered by a power plant consisting of two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 turboprop aircraft engines, each of which is capable of developing a thrust of 620 hp, which is optimal for both payload and travel speed. The maximum flight speed of the Harbin Y-12 aircraft is 328 km / h, which meets most of the requirements of customers.

His use of the aircraft Harbin Y-12 found also in the Air Force, which operated mainly for patrol flights, exploring the countryside and transporting small groups of troops.

For more than 30-year cycle of the Chinese engineers to issue several modifications of the aircraft:

  • Harbin Y-12 (I) - a transport version of the aircraft, which is the primary prototype. The version is powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-11 turboprop engines with a total capacity of 1000 hp;
  • Harbin Y-12 (II) - an improved version powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 620 hp engines each;
  • Harbin Y-12 (III) - Version with aircraft engines Turbomeca Ariel WJ-9;
  • Harbin Y-12 (IV) - Improved version with increased wingspan reinforced fuselage and increased maximum take-off weight. On board can accommodate up to 19 passengers;
  • Harbin Y-12C - Main production version of the aircraft with the engines Turbomeca Ariel WJ-9;
  • Harbin Y-12E - 18-spot modification of aircraft. It is used exclusively as a passenger version;
  • Harbin Y-12F - A revised version of the aircraft, equipped with new avionics, which has increased the maximum speed of flight and other minor improvements in aircraft performance parts;
  • Harbin Y-12 Turbo Panda - Export cargo version of the plane;
  • Harbin Y-12 Twin Panda - Export version of a passenger aircraft.
