To create a light multipurpose helicopter Ka-118 it took a lot of time and the work of designers. For the design office of Kamov Ka-118 became the first machine without a steering screw. To create this apparatus, we had to do a lot of theoretical work and carry out a lot of experimental studies both on the ground and in flight. Instead of the steering screw, this machine was equipped with an airframe fenestron, which should compensate for the reactive torque of this single-screw design. To study such a design in flight, a Ka-26SS helicopter was used. It was equipped with a new prototype beam, which had a jet system with horizontal and vertical plumage.

Since the Ka-26 and Mi-2 helicopters have won a large customer market and a huge range of applications for their entire operation, they have great credibility, but at the same time they require a lot of improvements. For these reasons, designers began to develop such a helicopter, but with more advanced qualities, they became Ka-118. After monitoring the helicopter market of previous vehicles, it became clear that most Mi-2 and Ka-26 helicopters will develop their entire flying resource to 2000-2005. All these reasons show the need to supply new and more advanced helicopters to the helicopter market, which can perform many tasks.

The main design feature and innovation of this aircraft is that the tail boom is equipped with a gas dynamic path, which was not in any previous car of this type. Along the entire tail boom there are slits, through which air is also supplied from the fan. Due to all this, an additional lateral force appears on the tail beam, which is aimed at compensating for the reactive moment. When using the steering system of this type of helicopter will be significantly higher performance characteristics and less drag in flight. Also, this design saves fuel and increases the transport performance of the machine. This tail can increase agility and reduce the load on the main screw machine. Using only one rotor will reduce the noise and vibration within the helicopter. But the most important thing is that Ka-118 has a high flight safety, even at low altitude.

The power plant is represented by two engines of the PW-206A model, which have a power of 630 horsepower each. The fan generates excessive pressure, which is directed to the tail section and the controlled nozzle through a special channel in the tail boom. The tail part of the machine consists of a V-shaped tail, which provides control, as well as from the stationary stabilizer of the apparatus.
