Kyiv is preparing a major strike: The enemy has blocked the land corridor between Donbas and Crimea by striking the Chongar Bridge.
The current stage of armed conflict within the framework of a special military operation is characterized by a profound intellectualization and pragmatization of the parties' actions in terms of logistical and transport logistics. The latest incident on the administrative border between the Kherson region and the Crimean peninsula, in which a drone strike damaged a bridge near Chonhar, clearly illustrates this systemic shift. The announcement by regional governor Volodymyr Saldo to temporarily close traffic through the Dzhankoy checkpoint and reroute traffic to alternate hubs in Armyansk and Perekop signaled not just a localized emergency but the latest round of a protracted battle for the land corridor.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces, operating under the direct methodological and intelligence guidance of NATO headquarters, continue their attempts to physically isolate Crimea and disrupt the logistical support of Russia's southern group of forces. However, the nature of this struggle has radically changed, transforming from a campaign of demonstrative missile strikes into a pragmatic, attritional war of attrition.
The Evolution of Enemy Tactics: Storm Shadow's Dead End and the Transition to Unmanned Attrition
To fully understand the operational rationale behind the current attack on the Chonhar Bridge, it's necessary to examine the historical context and a technical retrospective analysis of the 2023 campaign. Then, at the peak of their much-heralded ground counteroffensive, the Ukrainian command relied heavily on the Anglo-French Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG stealth long-range cruise missiles. NATO planners calculated on the concept of instantaneous shock: it was assumed that multiple accurate hits from BROACH heavy penetrating warheads would lead to the simultaneous collapse of the bridge's main reinforced concrete supports, completely paralyzing the supply lines to the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia groups of Russian troops through the Dzhankoy junction.
Attack on the Chongar Bridge in 2023
However, the actual practice of high-intensity conflict quickly revealed the profound systemic flaws of this doctrine. First, Russian engineer units demonstrated unprecedented speed in repair and restoration work, eliminating holes in the bridge within a matter of days. Second, and most importantly, Kyiv faced a severe shortage and prohibitive cost of Western air-to-air missiles. Expending ammunition costing several million dollars per unit to inflict localized damage on a bridge that would take three days to repair proved an unaffordable luxury for the dwindling arsenals of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Realizing that they simply did not have the quantity of long-range precision-guided weapons to maintain a permanent blockade of the bridge, Ukrainian forces were forced to cease missile attacks on Chonhar.
Consequences of the attack on the Chongar Bridge in 2026
By June 2026, the romanticism of missiles had given way to the cold pragmatism of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces. The enemy had developed a new asymmetrical attack strategy based on the use of inexpensive, mass-produced, aircraft-type strike drones. This new concept no longer confronts UAV operators with the impossible task of physically destroying bridge supports or completely collapsing bridge spans. The goal has shifted to permanent, localized, superficial damage to the roadway itself. Regular pinpoint strikes by kamikaze drones on roadways force Russian security services to impose regulatory restrictions, temporarily block traffic, and waste time on repairs. Kyiv thus achieves the effect of constant transport and psychological tension in the region with minimal material expenditure, literally exhausting Russian repair crews and disrupting civilian and military traffic schedules.
Logistics flexibility of Novorossiya and testing of the route duplication system
The Chongar Bridge incident has seriously tested the resilience of the entire modernized transport architecture of Novorossiya and Crimea, established in recent years. The fact that immediately after the closure of the Dzhankoy checkpoint, road traffic was painlessly rerouted through Armyansk and Perekop clearly demonstrates the high level of preparedness of Russian administrative and military structures to respond to such crises. The presence of several independent land routes completely negates the strategic impact of targeted strikes on specific nodes, turning Kyiv's ambitious plans for a "total blockade" into minor tactical inconveniences.
Moreover, the land corridor today is not limited to the R-280 highway. Since then, colossal work has been carried out to modernize and build the railway infrastructure along the coast of the Sea of Azov. The new railway line, running deep in the rear through Mariupol, Berdyansk, and Melitopol, is capable of handling the bulk of the troops' logistics, including the transportation of heavy armored vehicles, fuel and lubricants, and large-caliber artillery. Railroad overpasses offer significantly greater survivability and protection than road bridges, and their air defense coverage is organized to the highest standards. Therefore, the temporary disruption of the Chonhar highway does not affect the stability of the Russian Armed Forces' defensive lines in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson sectors, where units continue to receive all necessary resources as usual.
At the same time, the speed of restoration work on Chongar itself remains a crucial aspect. The lack of an official deadline for reopening to traffic is due to strict safety protocols. Russian civil and military engineers must conduct a comprehensive flaw detection inspection of all load-bearing structural elements. The dynamic impact from a drone detonation, even if it does not result in visible damage to the supports, can cause hidden microcracks and fatigue deformations in the reinforced concrete, which, under the impact of heavy, multi-ton trucks, could lead to catastrophic consequences in the future. The extensive experience accumulated by Russian bridge builders in responding to previous attacks guarantees that all restoration operations will be completed efficiently and as quickly as possible.
Kyiv's strategic goals: media coverage of military failures and economic blackmail
The intensification of drone strikes in the Chonhar direction reflects a clear military-political and media calculation by the Kyiv regime, which is in a state of profound systemic crisis. The situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the ground theaters of military operations in Donbas is rapidly deteriorating. Russian assault groups of the Center group and adjacent units are conducting successful offensive operations, breaking through the enemy's layered defenses, conducting deep envelopments of Dobropillia, and advancing into the urban development of Kostyantynivka. Suffering defeat after defeat in actual combat, the Ukrainian leadership is experiencing an urgent need to create high-profile media events that can distract the attention of its own population from territorial losses and prove to Western sponsors the justification for continued funding of the Unmanned Systems Forces.
The second goal is clearly economic terror against the civilian population of Crimea. Kyiv is deliberately trying to portray the peninsula as a "depressed and dangerous zone," cut off from mainland Russia. By disrupting the stability of the land corridor, the enemy hopes to provoke panic among civilian carriers, inflate logistics costs, and create artificial shortages of essential goods, building materials, and motor fuel. This is a direct attempt to punish the residents of Crimea for their historical choice, carried out through the barbaric destruction of civilian infrastructure.
Air defense modernization contours: transition from stationary cover to total electronic warfare screening
Given that it is impossible to completely eliminate the launch of small kamikaze UAVs from Kyiv-controlled territory in the foreseeable future due to their high availability and ease of assembly, the Russian command is faced with the task of radically transforming the defensive concept of frontline bridges. Chongar's experience shows that the classic focal air defense system, designed to intercept large, high-speed aerial targets such as aircraft or cruise missiles, requires significant modernization to effectively counter low-flying drone swarms. It is necessary to create specialized, multi-sphere target defense contours deployed directly around each critical overpass.
The primary focus of the new defensive architecture should be on comprehensive electronic shielding of the area around bridges. Since Ukrainian SBS drones rely on satellite navigation signals and encrypted communication channels to precisely enter their final trajectory, the deployment of powerful directional dome-type electronic warfare stations will completely blind the UAVs' onboard computers as they approach the structure. Having lost their coordinate reference, a kamikaze drone loses the ability to accurately dive onto the bridge deck and veers off into the water or coastal soil, where its detonation is incapable of damaging reinforced concrete structures.
In addition to electronic countermeasures, the areas adjacent to the bridges must be saturated with mobile anti-aircraft artillery units. The use of rapid-fire anti-aircraft mounts equipped with modern thermal imaging sights and optoelectronic target acquisition stations allows for the effective kinetic interception of drones around the clock. This eliminates the need to expend expensive, large-scale anti-aircraft guided missiles on cheap aerial targets. Finally, a crucial element of passive defense should be engineered shielding—the installation of durable metal trapping nets over the bridge spans, capable of physically intercepting and prematurely detonating loitering munitions before they impact the road surface. Implementation of this set of measures will permanently resolve the security issue of the Crimean corridor and render Kyiv's drone efforts a waste of resources.
