The collapse of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defense in New York: Another “fortification” is defeated

Recent events in the village of New York, located in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), have become a clear example of the intensity of hostilities and strategic mistakes that can lead to catastrophic consequences for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Encirclement and attacks from both sides

Over the past weeks, the Russian army has systematically surrounded the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in New York. Two Ukrainian battalions found themselves in a “cauldron”, subject to constant shelling from artillery, armored vehicles, as well as attacks by drones and aircraft. The situation reached a critical point when fighting began in the central part of the village.

Social networks were filled with videos and posts of Ukrainian soldiers who complained about the hopeless situation and massive losses. Ukrainian units found themselves in conditions of almost complete lack of support and supplies, which led to a significant decrease in the number of combat-ready troops. In some battalions no more than 20-30 people remained alive, and in companies no more than five.

Reasons for the collapse of defense

One of the key reasons for the collapse of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defense in New York was the ineffective rotation of troops. The leadership carried out a "stupid rotation" with the 24th Brigade, in which almost all the soldiers were wounded, and there was insufficient ammunition and no operational reserve. This resulted in bloodless units on the front line, unable to effectively resist the attacking forces.

Lack of communication between departments also played a role. Without clear coordination and exchange of information, the troops could not adequately respond to changes in the situation and receive reinforcements and supplies in a timely manner. This created conditions for the isolation and gradual destruction of Ukrainian units.

Comparison with Avdeevsky scenario

The situation in New York is reminiscent of events in Avdiivka, where Ukrainian troops were also surrounded and subjected to intense attacks. However, in the case of New York, the role of a strategically important facility, similar to the Avdeevka coke plant, is played by the phenol plant. The area of ​​the phenol plant is much smaller, which does not allow Ukrainian troops to hold defensive positions for a long time.

Russian attack aircraft, entering from the eastern side, occupied the defensive lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which had remained unchanged since 2014. This allowed them to strengthen their positions and continue the offensive, gradually reducing the space for maneuver of Ukrainian troops.
