During the German company in the East, Messershmitt BF 109 was the main fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe. Despite their small number, they have achieved considerable success in the fighting in the air.

With 1941 years during the Balkan company, the main fighter of the German Air Force was Messershmitt BF 109E. But by the time the attack on the Soviet Union in the Luftwaffe dominated BF 109F, although their number was only 609 machines, plus 57 fighter - bombers.

In the northern and central direction of the front, there were two air armies that were armed only with BF 109E fighters, and in the southern sector, five parts of the 4 fleet, consisting of fighters BF 109E and 109F. By the end of the first day of the invasion, this aircraft actually destroyed the 1200 aircraft of the Red Army aviation, both on the ground and in the air.
The main aircraft of Soviet aviation were And 153 and And 16. Although they were more maneuverable than the German fighters, they were inferior in speed and climb. The Luftwaffe had superiority in the air from the very beginning of the war, practically without reserves, relying on the quality of the material part and the skill of the pilots.

But over time, the number of combat-ready machines began to decline. The situation has worsened due to the transfer from Moscow to the Mediterranean beachhead one Air Force, which consisted of some of the best fighter groups. The German pilots still had the advantage in the number of combat vehicles, but the German industry could not meet the demand of the Luftwaffe fighter command.

In 1942, the German air units began to move to the fighters BF 109G. This machine had a more powerful engine and developed a great rate, although it has decreased maneuverability. This aircraft appeared in time, as the aircraft entered service with the Soviet aircraft Yak-1And at the end of the year 1942 - Yak-7 and Yak-9

The appearance of Jacob changed the situation in the air. The German aces still dominated the air, but the scales of superiority began to decline in favor of Soviet aviation, as the quantitative and qualitative component of the fighter aviation of the Soviet Union grew.

Polish PZL against Messershittov

When the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation entered the fight against ISIS and terrorists in Syria, everyone is impressed by the success of our aviation. Pinpoint missile and bomb strikes. Video footage provided by the RF command. Reports of destroyed militant bases, bombed oil caravans, warehouses with weapons and ammunition. Strikes from the ships of the Caspian flotilla, by long-range aircraft, really surprised the whole world. Everyone understood that the Russian armed forces, indeed, have significantly gained in combat power over the past ten years. They show excellent combat skills, and excellent possession of weapons and equipment.

All this is true, but given that our Aerospace Forces use new equipment and weapons in the Syrian war, our successes are quite natural. Despite the fact that the Tu-95 is far from a new aircraft, the avionics, weapon control systems, navigation systems are quite at the level of the 21st century.

A bit of history

In the history of the world wars, for me, it seems more impressive successes, when clearly weaker army, successfully opposed a stronger and more powerful enemies. When the outdated technology, with an old weapon war against well-equipped and trained enemy.

From very recent (by historical standards, of course) of the past, a very impressive look of the battle against the Polish pilots aces Goering with extensive combat experience, and flying on today's powerful machines.

The outbreak of war

Judge for yourself: in August 31 near the border of Poland and nearby airfields were 1-th Air Fleet General Aviation Kesselring and 4-second WF General Aviation Lёra.

A total of about 1800 combat aircraft, of which only Bf-109 fighters of various modifications - 197 pieces. 110 heavy escort fighters Bf-95. And they were flown by the most experienced pilots of famous squadrons, such as the famous "Legion Condor" and Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grunherz".

They were equipped with modern fighters Bf-109E, which only at the beginning of the 39 year, entered the squadron. Many pilots had experience of fighting in Spain and in the “Battle of Britain”.

What could oppose the Polish Air Force Luftwaffe.

At the beginning of the war, the Poles possessed 44 142 bombers and fighters. The main fighters were PZL P.7a and PZL P.11. This strut verhneplany with small motors, issued in the early 30-ies.

Imagine these planes against the Messerschmitts of the 109s and 110s. You don't need to be a big technician to understand how obsolete cars made in the early 30s were by 1939. What was it like to fight against the Germans with them? The PZL speed at altitude was a maximum of 390 km / h. The Me-109 has 573 km / h. Although both were armed with approximately the same weapon, the advantage in single combat was of course on the side of the 109th.

And, nevertheless, they are not only the Polish pilots were flying, and knocked famous aces of the Luftwaffe. The first strike took over the Polish Fighter Brigade. Its two divisions consisted of two squadrons. 111-I, 112-I, 113-123 squadron I had 29 PZL P.11c, P.15a - 15 pieces. There were 10 PZL P.7a exhausted cadets flight schools. Three old connected aircraft were not in the bill.

The first fight took a team at full strength in the morning 6.45, 1 September. After rising to intercept waves of bombers He-111, they engaged in battle with Me-110 cover.

In the first fight was hit P.11c Polushinskogo lieutenant, but the plane was shot down by the Poles Grabmana Major, he was wounded. Later in the day, the team re-entered into an unequal battle with an escort bombers - Me-109.

1 September. German losses. Me 2-109 lieutenant had been shot down and Borowski podhorunzhim Radomski (113 Squadron). Me 2-109 111 squadron downed pilots. Sidorovich squadron commander brought down "Messer", but he was shot down. Lieutenant Colonel Paul rammed a German, he was saved by parachute.

Fighting on such a technically and morally outdated technology, the Polish pilots were not afraid to engage in the Mother of the German pilots flying at high-end appliances.

5 September. 112 squadron pilots downed pilots famous "Condor Legion" Hammesa Major and Lieutenant Berentsa. It was a fighter escort of Me-110. Victory achieved Stzhembosh lieutenant and lieutenant Tsebzhinsky.

Of course, the Polish air force suffered incalculably heavy losses in the September battles. But the conversation is not about this, but about how even outdated weapons, in the hands of experienced, competent and courageous fighters, can be very effective even against the latest technology.

Fighters BF 109 participated in all the battles with the Soviet aircraft. They are the latest in a group of JG-3 Luftwaffe aircraft came out of "boiler" at Stalingrad. At the end of the year 1943, in the Kuban, in air battles was attended by about 220 fighters Messershmitt BF 109. They were almost all available aircraft of this type.
But, nevertheless, that the German Luftwaffe in the Kuban were defeated by the first aircraft of the Soviet Union, which resulted in the further course of the war.
