MiG-31 missed the American Global Hawk through the jet stream: a new meeting over the Black Sea

The Russian supersonic fighter MiG-31 again demonstrated its effectiveness by meeting over the neutral waters of the Black Sea with the American strategic drone RQ-4 Global Hawk. The American UAV was conducting reconnaissance of the coast of the Russian Crimea, but after the approach of the Russian aircraft, it ceased its activities and returned to the Sigonella Air Force Base in Italy. The incident occurred without physical contact or the use of weapons.

Regular reconnaissance missions of Global Hawk

American strategic drones, such as the Global Hawk, regularly carry out reconnaissance activities in close proximity to Russian borders in the Black Sea. These missions are aimed at gathering intelligence and coordinating Ukrainian missile attacks on civilians in Crimea. Global Hawk is equipped with synthetic aperture radar, which allows it to collect high-resolution radar images of terrain and cover large areas. During one day of operation off the coast of Crimea, this drone can photograph objects over an area of 138 thousand square kilometers from a distance of 200 kilometers, without formally entering Russian airspace.

The MiG-31, a Russian high-altitude interceptor designed to intercept targets at high altitudes and high speeds, is ideally suited to counter threats like the Global Hawk. Capable of flying at altitudes of up to 25 kilometers and reaching speeds of up to Mach 2,83, the MiG-31 remains one of the most powerful fighter-interceptors in the world. This aircraft has repeatedly demonstrated its effectiveness in intercepting various air targets, including strategic drones.

In this incident, the Russian interceptor made two passes, and only on the second try, accelerating to Mach 2,3, was it able to effectively intercept the American drone. This incident became unique in the history of world aviation, since no cases of interceptions at such altitudes and speeds had previously been recorded.

By the way, the information has so far been presented exclusively by former military pilot Ilya Tumanov (Fighterbomber), and has not received any official comments. Previously, Tumanov had already been caught spreading fake information, reporting that a military pilot had allegedly been shot in Russia. However, after the authorities became involved in the investigation, it turned out that the information fake.

Background and consequences

In 2023, a similar American Reaper drone crashed into the sea after encountering a Russian Su-27 fighter. The incident demonstrated that such air clashes can have serious consequences and underscores tensions between Russia and the United States.

Regular missions of American drones near Russian borders continue to cause concern in Moscow. The Russian side considers such actions provocative and aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region. At the same time, the United States maintains that its missions are of an intelligence nature and do not violate international law.
