NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System, National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is an anti-aircraft missile system developed jointly by specialists from Norway and the United States. It is an advanced mobile anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system for operating at short and medium distances against all types of air targets.

History of creation

The NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system began to be developed in the 90s of the last century. Its key feature is the use of aviation cruise missiles to hit targets, which, at a relatively low cost of the latter, should have ensured the effectiveness of their use to repel missile attacks, hit unmanned aerial vehicles, ballistic missiles, aircraft and helicopters of various types, including high-altitude targets.

The NASAMS air defense system was first put into service in 1994, and during the tests it was found that these air defense systems can successfully hit cruise missiles - depending on the modification of the complex, it can reach 99%.

In the 2000s, the complex was upgraded, and in 2006, the NASAMS II version appeared, which has an improved radar and has a longer target range. Starting in 2019, the NASAMS III version appeared.

Depending on the version, the complexes can be either completely mobile or mobile.

NASAMS

The NASAMS air defense system is the basic version of the air defense system. The AMRAAM cruise missile used here, together with the control systems and the MPQ-64 Sentinel X-band radar, allow hitting targets at distances up to 25 kilometers, when the latter are detected at distances up to 40 kilometers.

The NASAMS launcher carries 6 AMRAAM cruise missiles. The composition of one battery includes 9 launchers and three radar stations, which provides the ability to hit a large number of targets.

NASAMS II

The NASAMS II air defense system is a modified version of the air defense system. A key feature is the advanced communication network. The NASAMS II complex has an upgraded radar. The NASAMS II SAM battery includes 12 launchers of six missiles each, 8 radars and a fire control complex.

NASAMS II complexes can be visually guided to the target, which significantly increases the performance of air defense systems in the case of operation in the area of ​​​​EW systems.

The maximum target range for NASAMS II air defense is 30 kilometers.

NASAMS III

The NASAMS III air defense system is a deeply modernized version that can be integrated with NATO air defense systems. The maximum target range of these air defense systems is 50 kilometers, while improved radars are capable of identifying targets at distances up to 75 kilometers, which makes these air defense systems medium-range air defense systems.

The NASAMS III SAM battery includes six launchers with short and medium range missiles.

HUMRAAM

The HUMRAAM air defense system is a variant of the NASAMS complex installed on the base of the HMMVW armored car. Carries four short-range anti-aircraft missiles.

SLAMRAAM

The SLAMRAAM air defense system is a variant of the NASAMS complex installed on the base of the HMMVW armored car. It carries six anti-aircraft missiles - two short-range missiles and four long-range missiles.

NASAMS air defense systems can use AIM-120 AMRAAM, AMRAAM-ER and AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles.

During its first large-scale combat use, NASAMS complexes were tested on the territory of Ukraine. According to the official reports of the Ukrainian and American military, the effectiveness of the destruction of cruise missiles was 100% - 10 out of 10 missiles fired were recorded.
